Oedipus Rex: A Study in Classical Tragedy
The word tragedy is used frequently in modern contexts; from the recent sinking of the Italian cruise liner, to the scandal that haunted football coach Joe Paterno's final days, to the loss of a relative or friend. Yet in the literary sense, tragedy is a genre of its own, with clearly defined traits and qualities. The purpose of this unit is to reveal the true essence of tragedy as Aristotle defined it in 5th century Greece and to see how an understanding of tragedy then resonates in tragedy today.
